Teeth whitening – the natural look
Teeth whitening is now one of the most popular treatments in dentistry. It isn’t only young people and celebrities who like this treatment. People are often aware that their teeth are gradually darkening as they age which is natural. The light, white, bright Hollywood dazzle isn’t for everyone either, but many people would love their teeth to be a bit brighter and natural looking rather than a fake white shade.
Everyone’s teeth are different and the ultimate colour will depend on the individual. It is worth noting that tooth whitening products only work on natural teeth. It is important to have a pre-whitening check-up, to make sure the mouth and teeth are healthy and a scale and polish is recommended so everything is super-clean. Research shows that a number of patients experience some sensitivity during whitening but there is plenty of help on hand to alleviate any symptoms.
That said, tooth whitening is easy to do and can produce some really lovely results.
The legislation is very clear, in Europe and the UK, only a registered dentists (or dental hygienist, dental therapist or clinical dental technician working to a dentist’s prescription) can use teeth whiting products containing or releasing between 0.1%-6% hydrogen peroxide. Breach of these regulations is a criminal offence.
Teeth whitening products containing or releasing between 0.1% and 6% hydrogen peroxide can ONLY be sold to dental practitioners.
There are many over the counter tooth whitening products that sound promising but as they can only legally contain a very small amount of hydrogen peroxide, the results are often disappointing.
- For each cycle of use, first use is by a dental practitioner or under their direct supervision by a dental hygienist or dental therapist or clinical dental technician.
The Regulations say that products containing or releasing up to 6% hydrogen peroxide can be used, as long as:
- Products of this strength are sold only to dental practitioners.
- A dentist has to first carry out a dental examination of the patient ensuring there are no risks or any other concerns about their oral condition.
- The patient is over 18 years old.
- For each cycle of use, first use is by a dental practitioner or under their direct supervision by a dental hygienist or dental therapist or clinical dental technician.
