A dental implant is an artificial root to which a which an artificial tooth can be attached
Dental implants can often be placed at the same time as teeth removal.
Dental implants have been around for a very long time, they are seen to be the gold standard for replacing missing teeth.
Over the past decade their popularity has increased as they are widely used in mainstream dental practices nationwide.
No cutting of adjacent natural teeth is necessary and they also preserve bone.
They also reduce bone loss associated with losing teeth by preventing the collapse of the lips and soft tissues.
Upper left second premolar implant replacement of missing natural tooth
Implants can be used to replace single, multiple or a whole jaw of teeth.
They can also be used to stabilise dentures by giving them something to
connect to.
Implants are generally regarded as the longest lasting dental treatment.
A dental implant is made up of three components
The Fixture
The fixture is the bottom of the implant and is the part that is physically embedded below the gum line, which then combines with the surrounding bone.
The Abutment
The abutment is the small portion that lies right around the gum line – the piece that allows a new tooth to connect to the fixture.
The Prosthesis
The prosthesis is the crown, bridge or denture that the implant supports and will resemble a natural tooth/teeth. These may be cemented or screwed into place.
Implants are extremely strong and can last as long as natural teeth
Brush and floss just as you would natural teeth – good oral hygiene is very important
■ Multiple implants
Dental implants can be used to replace one or several missing teeth.
All routine forms of tooth replacement such as bridges or dentures can be supported by dental implants.
■ Who is suitable for dental implants?
Dental implants are suitable for most healthy adults whose jaw has stopped growing.
■ Implant placement
Implant placement is a minor surgical procedure performed under sterile conditions in the dental surgery under local anaesthesia. Once placed, the implant will be left to heal for approximately three months
before the artificial tooth/teeth are placed.
If an implant is replacing a front tooth, a temporary denture is often worn throughout the implant integration process. This procedure may also apply for multiple implants where a removable over denture or same day fixed teeth will be provided.

I had a Dental implant last year performed by Dr Alex Tahalani. Although initially nervous, the thing I liked about Dr Alex was the way that he listened to my concerns so that when we discussed options, we could find the right path for me. The work was very skilfully performed as you might expect and a year later, I am very happy with my new implant and looking forward to many years of chewing! I thoroughly recommend this service.

I just wanted to thank Gidea Park dental team in particularly Alex for his professionalism and fantastic service. I was hesitant to get implants done as I’ve had bad experience with another local dental surgeon. I decided to try Gidea Park dental practice and they have been amazing. I am extremely pleased with the outcome of my implants. Alex was genuine, he explained the process, was not pushy and double checked at each stage everything was going to order. They also fitted me in for an emergency appointment; the reception team were accommodating and prompt in their service. I would highly recommend Gidea Park Dental Practice, brilliant staff and I will continue my dental treatments here. Finally found a perfect dentist.
